"Painting Wolves"

There was no special reason.
I simply felt the urge to paint wolves.
I cannot explain why.

Through the figure of the wolf, my work explores the emotions and questions dwelling deep within the human heart, while also reflecting on Japanese views of life and death, our relationship with nature, as well as cultural and philosophical perspectives.
Depending on the theme, I sometimes depict subjects other than wolves as well.
Here, I would like to share several elements that shape my artistic world, offering a glimpse into the work of Hiroko Takahashi.

Hiroko Takahashi

Born in Akita Prefecture in 1977 and raised in Sapporo. Graduated from the Sapporo School of The Arts. Began working as an artist in 2013 and is currently based in Sapporo.

The work and its world

Higan and this shore

Tracing Japanese views on life and death through ancient beliefs such as mountain worship, sun worship, and serpent veneration. Where do people go after death? And where does the soul come from?

Looking at Japan

Although I was born and raised in Japan, there is still much about its culture I do not fully know. Now, I revisit and observe it again, exploring what contemporary Japanese people inherit from the past.

Meikyo

Could it be that beneath the layers of socially cultivated ideas, our true voices quietly reside? Meikyō is not a clearly narrative series, but it gathers moments of self-exploration and reflection.

Dragon Presence

Though they do not exist in reality, many people recognize their presence. Human creations—mythical beings and imagined forms—continue to breathe life into our surroundings.

silver world

Animals and landscapes emerge in white over layers of silver paint. Like an idealized world, the scenes are bathed in a gentle, blessing-filled light.

Other

In addition, I have created works on various other themes. Here, I introduce some of these pieces.
