Lightning of the Underworld
In Japanese mythology, it is written that when the deity Izanami-no-Mikoto passed away, her body was covered with eight Ikatsuchi (thunder) gods. The true nature of the Ikatsuchi gods is unclear, but some say they are literal gods of thunder, others that they are evil spirits, or even that they represent snakes... What were the ancient Japanese trying to represent?
Speaking of snakes, some say that the shimenawa ropes at shrines are meant to represent two snakes mating. Some say that the paper streamers hanging from the ropes are derived from thunder.
It may be that the mythical thunder and snakes still exist in modern times.

Lightning from the underworld
In Japanese mythology, when the god Izanami no Mikoto died, her remains were covered by eight Ikatsuchi (thunder) gods.
The true nature of the Ikatsuchi gods is unclear. Some theories suggest they are simply thunder gods, while others claim they are evil spirits or even snakes...
What did the ancient Japanese people intend to represent?
Speaking of snakes, there is a suggestion that the shimenawa ropes at shrines depict “snakes mating.” There is also a theory that the paper streamers hanging from the shimenawa ropes originate from thunder.
Both the thunder and snakes of mythology may continue to exist in modern times.
